This should be a fairly simple one, but can someone explain the need for the FET in the splitter blend? is it just to make it possible to put in the phase polarity switch?

This type phase-switch has input impedance of 1Meg non-Inverting but 100K when Inverting.

In guitar chains, that's enough difference to notice. Naked pickups will lose a little highs when loaded in 100K. (Active pickups and most pedals won't really care.)

The FET buffer shows presents 2Meg to the input jack for either phase.

So sure: if FETs offends you, leave it out.

The FET buffer could just as well be an op-amp buffer.

Ok, thanks a lot, it's so much a matter of offense as space, and I was planning on omitting the switch anyway
