I found this schem. on the vox site today...

i have a few questions:

1. is that the same Lm741 as what i think it is?

2. are those diodes still readily available, or will modern day
   ones replace them?

4. on C6, what does 16V1 stand for?

i am kind of interested in building this box....but am not for sure if it's
worth the trouble.....

what do you guys think?

1. is that the same Lm741 as what i think it is? Yes, its a LM741 Op amp, this version is the older one in a metal can.  You can also use an IC version.

2. are those diodes still readily available, or will modern day
ones replace them? modern day ones will work just fine.  D1 & D2 could possibly be 1n914 or 1n4148 or could possibly use 1n34a's(these are germaniums)D4 is a zener diode 4.7volts

4. on C6, what does 16V1 stand for?  1 uf  16v minimum electrolytic

Hope this helps.  And sure, why not try it out!

That sure looks awfully close to the MXR Distortion+ :?

casey

which one came 1st?  the MXR or the Vox ?

hey thanks for the info arn.

well, i went and check out the mxr.....yup it's real close.

especially the input section....bummer man...

i presume that vox had it out first and the mxr
is a refined version....does anyone know?

Those Vox pedals are from the early 80's, so the MXR beats it by almost ten years.

That said, it's a great sounding pedal! Remember those boxes? They were light grey and slightly wedge shaped, so you could put them side by side by side and they would be in a semi-circle. At least that's what the magazine ads looked like!

I agree that the Vox 1901 is a great-sounding pedal.  I used it as the main inspiration for my "VoodooDrive" (on my website for anyone interested).  Main difference is that I used a 1N60 (Ge) and 1N914 (Si) diode pair for soft, asymetric clipping, then added the popular "harmonics" control mod.

Cheers.

Hi Bred, what you mean with popular "harmonic" control mod.
Could you publich a schematic please ?

Thanks.
