There is an output buffer on Fuzz Central which is used with the Clyde McCoy Wah to stop tone sucking. Could this be used at the output of the Small Stone to get around the volume drop. The buffer has a trimpot to let you adjust the gain.

The schematic is here:

Get rid of the 0.05uf and 1M gnd resistor on the buffer part in that mccoy schematic and run the output of the Small Stone directly into the Gate of the 2n5457. It should work okay, dunno how noisy it'll be though. You should breadboard it so you can audition different 2n5457 or other JFETS to pick the quietest one. You may also be able to modify the input impedance resistor of the small stone a tad to increase volume without negatively impacting it. Not sure on that one though.

I have a box that I re-purposed as a loop box and put the beginner project on the return of the loop, that way I took care of the volume drop/terrible bypass of my russian small stone and my morley pfa, not to mention I used a circuit I had laying around unused and a box from a crappy pedal, the only thing I was out was a stomp switch out of my parts bin.
New and exciting innovations in current technology!
