i may try and breadboard up the noisegate section and see if it works. ;)

I'm not sure about this, but I think that you could add a release control to the gate by replacing the 1M resistor in front of the JFET with a 1M pot in series with a 100K resistor the way that it's done on the Gains Noise Gate:

I had a Soloist in the late 80's and remember it as an awesome bit of kit.   I thought a while ago that I might like to build a workalike, as mentioned here in Feb 2010:

I remember looking at that 'back from the sixties' page back then, but at that time the schematics weren't there, just the photos.

About a year ago I found a dead Soloist, previously owned by Huw Lloyd Langton from Hawkwind, allegedly.  It's been sitting around in the workshop ever since, waiting for me to summon up the nuts to get stuck into fixing it.

I never thought to check back to that page for the schematics, thought I would have to trace everything.  I can't tell you how chuffed I am now!!
