EH Hogs Foot lacking boost

I have a vintage Hogs Foot here that when fully cranked is only slightly above unity gain. It's one of the first edition ones using this schematic...

I swapped out the original 2n5133 for a 2n5088 and it did not make much of a difference. Are these things just not that loud? If I wanted to mod it for more volume what would be my best bet?

I'd check the electrolytics.  It should have plenty of volume.

What is the Collector DC voltage?

Shim the 43K to get Collector voltage above 1V but below 8V. I do not know what is "right". (I suspect the originals were all over the place.)
