Hi everybody :)

I started modding my crybaby a few weeks ago (Maybe even a few months..) and I really like the way it sounds. It's sounds really vintage-y and fat and warm which I love :)

A few days ago I brought my friend's crybaby in and compared his with mine. Mine sounded much better than his unmodded one, except for one thing - His wah sort of boosted the guitar signal every time I pushed the treadle with my fingers all the way down, and it also gave it a bit of better tone.
When I played with my wah it sort of did a fat Wohhh and his did a big loud Waaaahhhhh... :)

My question is what can I do to change back the waahhh-ing of my crybaby. I still want it to sound fat an vintagey but I also want a little boost when I push the treadle with my fingers all the way down.
Will it help to change the transistors or is the sound affected mainly by the values of the resistors?

Thanks a lot!

hi! hope this helps. http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/wahpedl/wahped.htm I think this is the Bible(should I say ;D) where it all begins. Goodluck!

If you did the gain mod (emiiter resistor on Q1) the wah usually gets an extra dose of fatness from the frequency hump actually distorting a bit, you can change that first transistor for slight differences in the quality of that distortion, its probably easiest to socket it and just try whatever (I think I ended up using BC108 in mine)

Ok, so I changed the 390 resistor to a 270 one, but the signal only got louder. Then, I changed back the 0.022 sweep cap to 0.01 and then I got what I wanted with the boosted high end, but now the tone of the wah is kind of cheep and thin and I want to make it super FAT and warm as it was before I switched the sweep cap back to the stock value.

What can I do to fatten it up a little? (or a lot if possible.. :) )

These are the changes I've done so far:

  • True Bypass Mod
  • 2x LED mod
  • Adjustable Q
  • Gain and Bass Response Mod
  • Midrange resistor mod
  • Sweep Range and un-Sweep Range mod...
  • And a few more I found on the web

Here are the current values I got:

Ohhh and this is how I placed the LEDs:
