So a few months back I started Building this from this layout.

http://www.sabrotone.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/DynaCompJangle.gif

I had ordered some ca3080's off ebay from china .... They turned out to be bunk counterfeiter fake non working etc.. the good thing that came out of that was I got to read Tons of info from PRR and RG which taught me a lot so thanks guys  ;D

I ended up buying some NOS tin-hat Ca3080s that worked and my circuit was actually good ! I hadn't messed up any soldering! I went over this board sooo many times checking component values and traces and voltages. Ive had it working now for a lil while but was still working on the enclosure off and on. Ive had it boxed up and tested along side other pedals and by itself and here's where my questions start.

So it works but it sounds VERY VERY dark in normal mode, I have to say doesn't sound like other dynacomps Ive heard. It sounds like I turned the tone down all the way on my guitar (but i haven't) . And when i flip on the jangle mod switch it sounds sooo High and BRIGHT! If I rub my finger across a string even lightly it sounds like I can hear the metal stripping off its so high pitched!

When I first built this I didnt have Polar caps for C8 c9 and c10 So I used Non polar Electrolytics . I figured they would be fine from everything Ive read. But It was the only parts I had different from the layout even tho same value and material just BP instead of polar. From what I read it only matters in the power section and this seemed fine. I figured I would change them to regular 1uf electro's anyway last night and... No change in sound(what I figured)

Has anyone built a dynacomp with the jangle mod here that can tell me if the sound is that drastic in tone ? Or look at the layout and maybe spot a value problem. I remember looking at the schematic this was from some where months back but I cant find it now. I thought last I looked all the values of caps where the same as the layout I used to build from.

And if everything is in order and its just the nature of this circuit any tips on which caps/components to change to get it sounding more normal to me.

Also since tone and sound is subjective ill try to give an idea of what I play on and the sound I normally get.

I mainly play thru a strat into a 1973 peavey vintage (tweed bassman clone 2x12 master vol) I play blues mostly and usually run my tone some where in the middle , tone controls usually Bass up high, Mids in the middle and highs at 3/4's I usually get a tone that's not to bassy not to high and just right in the mids I'd say its semi flat to meaty.

I love compressors that have a nice squeeze to them. Ive built the flatline(softknee feeling) and this dynacomp, and I modded a boss CS-3 with the monte allums opto plus mod. I wish this dynacomp was more tame in the highs with the jangle switch because with the jangle switch on it sounds actually very nice and articulate. Just way to high, even if I take the highs on my amp all the way down. I normally play with a compressor on always so I dont mind adjusting my amp to fit ok with the comp as long as I can tame it.

Anyway sorry for the rambling. I will post sound clips, pics of the guts etc If it will help, just say the word .

It looks to me like C3 has been listed incorrectly in the parts list; should be 1nF, not 10nF. That would cause the symptoms you describe.

Additionally, if the jangle mod is too bright (once everything is confirmed working), you can tame it by soldering a capacitor across the switch. Say, 1nF or 470pF.

Woah ! Thanks a ton Merlin Your da Best! Fast quick painless fix! I should have spotted it myself but some times it takes another set of eyes and some one thats been down this road before! so you sir Have made my day! I looked back over the other vero layout for the version without the jangle mod and sure enough C3 is 1nf on that layout. Checked to make sure it was the correct component moved for the mods switch and looks like thats the one!

Ill try out this cap on the switch as well ! Id buy you a coffee or something if I could! thanks again! ;D
