when i was a car sprayer, using pinstriping, the trick was to use very thin coats of colour..just enough to cover

then build up with clear, to avoid deep ridges...

most of the the car stuff i did was really dusting the colour on...leaving the clear to be the depth/gloss finish.......just my 2p.  :)

those airbrushes look like fun !!!... :icon_cool:

Thanks Rob, appreciate the feedback, i'm ever the student.

What's happening is the colour coats are, for the most part, really light/thin. Where i'm getting into trouble is that most of the acrylic paints/colours i'm using are transparent. To put one colour over another i first have to paint over the earlier colour with an opaque paint to hide that earlier colour and give me an appropriate coloured base (usually white) for the next show colour. Even with paints sold as opaque base coat sealers, it's a big challenge to hide that first colour so i inevitably end up with a too-thick white coat, and then to add to the fun on this one i was pretty heavy handed with sealing the pinstriping tape as there were some gaping spots for seapage, even pooling under it, didn't do myself any favours.

Catch-22, if i seal the tape edges really well i enhance the ridges, if i don't seal the tape edges i get lesser ridges but all kinds of bleeding and a load of touch-up. Compromises and compromises,  walk the razors edge...

Anyways all great practice for making decals dissappear into the clearcoat!

+1 on the airbrush fun... great tools/toys!

another thing i used to do was 'feather' it..(for small repairs) .bear with me, might be a nice effect too..

lay your tape but with the edge to be painted  lifted  (curled back on itself) ( hold it back with masking tape)  and spray from the other side, and almost above...

that'll give a feathered edge rather than a solid  grooved one...

btw yep thats a pain when you have to spray more than you'd like just to get the  colour.. :)

Just had to bump this and show my "simple" setup for airbrush:

Badger Model 80-2 Diaphram Compressor and Badger 175-M Airbrush. Both of these are kind of the "SM-58" of airbrushes and compressors. The airbrush is "M" designated because it is stamped (and lifetime warranty by) Matco Tools.  ;D
