where would I get started attempting to mod an akai MPC operating system?

I know this is ambitious, I only know of one anonymous author of alternate operating systems for the akai MPC series, but I figure if anyone has tips on the matter itd be DIY stomp.

I already have some specific changes in mind, working with the limitations of the device. If anyone could offer some ideas on what I could begin researching to make this a reality I'd really like to hear it.

oh, and my only starting point is that I have the current official OS update and 3 previous OS versions. they come in the form of a .exe file, and a .sys file that need to be loaded into the RAM every time the unit powers on.
