...and wondering if there are any places you folks recommend where a few hours spent scavenging might turn up some decent old PNP Ge trannies...?

I know what I'd rather do in Amsterdam  :icon_twisted:

I'll bet there are a lot of "trannies" in Amsterdam... ;)

I've been there last november. A beatifull and quiet city. If you are on vacation take the train to Utrecht, another nice small town.

there's sometimes good bands playing in 'The Last Waterhole', close to the Leidse Plein.

I live in Amsterdam, but I wouldn't know where to look for that kind of stuff actually. For my uhm 'contemporary' electronic components I go to Radio Rotor: http://goo.gl/maps/55qK
Edit: Their transistor stock is listed online: http://www.rotor.eu/en/groep.php?txt=transistoren&groep=10

If by "hours of scavenging" you hint at flea market kind of stuff, check out the flea market at Waterloo Plein.

If you're looking for good live music venues, there are many. Tell me the date and a preferred genre and I could probably point you to some place.

Many tourists don't do much else besides smoking pot and checking out the red light district though. What usually happens is they start off by smoking 'just a little', get super stoned, then on their way back realising "man, that stuff is a lot more intense there than what I'm used to back home...".

Circular logic is best, because it's circular.

Well...I don't really partake in the smoking of stuff (nothin' against it -- it's just for health reasons) but I definitely would like to check out some live music venues and perhaps even some places where one can sit in for a song and jam with the house band.  To be honest, I would be just as interested in looking around old pawn shops and seeing small music joints as I would be in seeing the Van Gogh museum and the like.
