I noticed that on the TS-808 circuit, the cap comes before the resistor, and the resistor goes to ground.  On the Son of Screamer schematics I've seen, the resistor comes before the cap, and the cap goes to the +4.5V rail.  Why the difference between the two?

There's no electrical difference between the two. If you have components in series and nothing connected to the junctions in between them, then the order doesn't matter.

Edit: Missed the bit about the 4.5V rail. Selger's right, the capacitor blocks any DC current, so the 4.5V rail acts as AC ground in both cases.

Also, as far as AC signals are concerned, ground and the 4.5 volt rail are the same, the capacitor in there blocks all any DC component so it's more or less irrelevant to where its hooked up, as long as its a constant voltage. The 4.5 volt rail may have been chosen because it was easier to place the components when laying out the circuit board.

So -- tonally, the cap before the resistor (TS-808) is no different than the resistor before the cap (Son of Screamer)...yes?  Maybe the difference results from layout as Seljer suggested.
