I cant sem to get these circiuts working and yes I have check my wiring many times. I am wondering if it is a bias issue.

The circuit I built is biased exactly like the ones below. The rat does nothing, and the DS-1 shows a little signal if I pound on the strings

Always check your pin voltages. Do you have 1/2V+ on the correct pin for the op amp? If so, build an audio probe and "listen" to the output of the IC. Then move on to the transistor. Listen to the signal before and after each transistor/buffer.

I built my rat from the Tonepad page and had no issues... other then deciding which songs NOT to use it on!

I'm not familiar with that particular RAT schematic (it's not a real RAT), but there is one obvious problem with it at the IC - pins 2 & 3 are reversed.  You will also need a cap (usually 30pF depending on the op-amp) between pins 1 & 8 if you are using an op-amp that has external compensation (LM308, OP07, TL070).  And I'm not sure if you've done this because the diagram isn't clear, but you also need to provide +9V at pin 7.  Otherwise it looks okay but real RATs don't use Q1.

I'm not familiar with the DS-1 but it appears to have the same problem with the +ve and -ve inputs of the IC reversed.  Signal needs to come in to the +ve and feedback needs to connect to the -ve.
