transistor like the Dallas Rangemaster???

Probably not; this is an very early transistor, germanium, PNP.  Amps were tube amps at that time; solid state amps came at a later date, with silicon NPN's. But OC44 seems perfect for Rangemasters. There are also good reports on using them in Fuzz Faces.

I thought that I heard of some Z Vex Fuzz Factorys with OC44s in it, but can't remember for sure.

YEP !!  Have a look at the schematic for the VOX T60, it uses 3 in the preamp section, I bought a T60 in 1964 and it is still in use in the practice room.
