Hey guys, I've been working on this idea for an effects looper similar to the Carl Martin Octaswitch, however when looking at schematics people have posted related to that pedal, I get extremely confused - they use hundreds of diodes etc. and I don't understand why. Anyway, here is my proposed diagram that I thought would work, and I am just wondering if anyone can verify if it will, and if not, why not. Thanks a bunch, Ryan.

The hundreds of diodes are for isolating the outputs to turn on the relays. If you don't do this, every relay is on all the time because they're all connected through the common side of the dip switches. The diodes keep this from happening. Any "on" back feeds through the DIP switches to every other one.

You may want to read all of the "programmable footswitches" articles at Geofex.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks for a quick response :) but I have to admit I am a huge noob when it comes to this type of thing (clearly) and I just don't understand that page at all :-\. Is my diagram insanely different to what I am trying to achieve or is a single diode from every lug leading out of the DIP switches enough to solve my issue?
