Question regarding running very high HFE transistors into lower (hot silicon)

So I built the hot silicon, and I love it.. It sound absolutely HUGE, I changed all the .01 caps to .1 and this thing is a BEAST. I also used a .0033 for the tone circuit rather than the .0082. I'm happy with the tone, and the gain level.. BUT the decay is extremely gated. Is this the mpsa's 5000+ hfe into the 200hfe 2n2222 causing this?

The transistor voltages will help.
Did you use a darlington transistor for the first stage?
Try a 2n2222, 2n5088 etc for the first stage.
