brett

Hi
try this (based on ideas seen in ring modulators):
pickup -> 8ohm:1K transformer -> clipping diodes to ground (+/- a control pot)-> 1K:8 ohm transformer -> high input impedance amp/pedal.

The *untested idea* is that the 1st transformer boosts the voltage by about 11 times. Plenty to get some clipping action.
The pickup "sees" the high impedance at the far end when not clipping. The clipped part of the signal is low impedance, unless the control pot is used (try a linear 100k pot).

This setup definately works when there's a buffer between the pickup and the 1st transformer. Not sure whether the signal losses will be too great without it.
cheers
