FF Fuzz knob cuts/boosts highs

Hey all,

I just built two Fuzz Faces, one PNP germanium and one NPN silicon.  I've made lots of effects but surprisingly never the classic fuzz.  They both only seem to be usable with the fuzz knob in the 8-10 range because when it's set anything lower than that, the highs (and lows) are drastically cut, it sounds really muffled, and the tone loses all the "oomph".

The germanium seems more muffled across the whole range (though when fuzz is maxed, all of the frequencies seem to be fairly even), while the silicon goes from almost piercing highs (still good sounding) when the fuzz is on 10 to being unusable at anything below 7 or 8.

They are both biased for 4.5v at the collector of Q2 and the hFE is about 85/130 in the germanium and 100/130 in the silicon.

Is this how Fuzz Faces generally sound, or have I done something wrong here?

You're right on the money. The germaniums clean up well with the volume pot though.
