I'm a bass player, and I haven't tried too many compressors but I have to admit I'm fond of the Orange Squeezer. I increased C1 and C4 (on the General Guitar Gadgets schematic: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_osq_sc.pdf) from 47nF to 100nF, changed R2, R9, R11 and R12 to trimpots and added a 10nF cap from output to ground to kill some hiss as well as some high end. Transparent it's not, but it's punchy as anything and subtly thickens the sound. Easy to build, too.

I built the Q&D Compressor for bass.  I really like it so far.

If you like subtle compression, I recommend the Madbean Afterlife. It's a very simple yet affective little optical compressor with no loss of low end.

I just built this for bass and it is great. I replaced the maxon cp9 with the afterlife. I highly recommend reading the ovnilab website.

Does anybody have schematic for Madbean Afterlife? Links are dead.  :'(

Madbean says it is a John Hollis Flatline.  There are a number of PCB and vero layouts posted around for it.  Just look for Hollis Flatline.
