npn and pnp in the same circuit?

So I get how basic circuits work, but im confused at so how this works.. And what would he effects be? Forgive my noobish questions, I really do want to learn.

Check into some schematics...there are several effects using npn and pnp transistors together..the harmonic percolator, for one.
