sorry if this seems dumb but im here to learn.
I dont have the right value resistor (330k)
heres the dumb question.
Is it ok to stick a 300k and a 30k end to end? ( i believe its called in series)

A 300K and a 30K in series will give you 330K, if a 330K is what you need.

Thanks for that ok dumb question No2
what say i need a 100k pot and i only have a 50k pot to hand and a 50k resistor
Is there anything i can do with the two to make it work.

Maybe. Depends on what you mean by "work".

If you only need the top half or bottom half of the range on the pot, yep, you can put the two in series.

It is possible that you can use only the 50K pot, as many circuits work with a modestly incorrect value of pot, especially if they're only doing some kind of voltage attenuation. You have to know the circuit and what it can do to some extent to do more than try it and hope.

But no, there is no way to make a 50K pot and a 50K resistor do the same result in all ways as a 100K pot without re-connecting them in the middle of operation.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

heres what i've built

http://www.muzique.com/schem/muff3.gif

but i've used a 50k pot and it seems totally ineffective.
(It dont work guv.) the circuit works it defo gives a boost but the attenuation pot dont do jack and i dont get why apart from i used the one i had to hand rathaer than the correct 100k pot described in the schematic.

Any advice greatfully recieved
thanks

Kesh

if it does nothing you probably didn't ground the third lug. or you shorted the other two lugs together.

Kipper4

that could be the problem since i have lug 1 going to ground and 3 going to the 1uf cap
would this cause that result?

LucifersTrip

if wired  correctly, it'll probably just have a bit less volume and be more trebley than with a 100K
