I built this clone following this layout.
http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.fi/2012/08/ehx-civil-war-big-muff.html

It works and sounds great, but the tone knob doesn't have as huge range as heard on the video in the link above.
I used 500p caps (which are in the real thing) instead of 430p. Also I used 4n cap instead of the 3,9n (3n9) cap.

Pots are Alpha 100k lin pots.

Anyone have an idea what could cause this more subtle tone control?
I'll post pics if needed.

Those cap changes won't make any noticeable difference, they're very close to the specified values. Can you be more specifc about the tone control being "subtle"? Do you mean it hardly alters the tone? Do you get anything like a standard BMP tone sweep, i.e. muffled and bassy fully anticlockwise, bright and thin when fully clockwise? I'd check values of resistors connected around the tone pot (e.g. make sure they're not 220k instead of 22k or something) and check that the cap to ground off tone lug 1 and resistor to ground off tone lug3 are definitely connected to ground - breaking one of these connections is a common mod to "bypass" the tonestack, though the tone control will still have an effect, it is very subtle with one of those ground connections broken.

Yes the tone knob doesn't go from bassy to thin. It's more like a subtle high roll-off

I'll check those grounds.

try a larger size pot or a different style pot, ie. rev-log or the opposite of whatever it is at the moment.

It's probably wired wrong. My guess is you have two of the tone control pot wires reversed.

Hey!

I haven't spotted any mistakes so far. I uploaded few pics if anyone could help me with this. Hope you can get some sense of these photos.

I built this version and it works flawlessly, the tone control goes to muffled to screeching. it's up to you to check the differences between the two layouts, I had too much shiraz wine right now... ;D
