WAHs: Can I use a standard pot if I'm gonna "stompbox" the circuit?

If I put a WAH pedal PCB/circuit in a standard stompbox-type enclosure (to create a Band Pass Filter without the treadle) is it necessary to use the wah-type pot (Hot Pot, et al) or will the circuit work just as well with a standard pot as long as I select the proper curve?  (A, B, C, W ..)

Are the "special" pots used in wah pedals only required due to their mechanical design which fits the need for the pinion gear?  Or is there something special about their electronic design that also makes them necessary to get the same sound from them if used in a standard type stompbox enclosure?

Thanks.  :)
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you.

Yes. Ordinary pot works fine for what you propose.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I've thought of doing the same thing with a "Mo-Wah" PCB from the guitarpcb site.

If you get something built, let us know what you think about.

yes you can. I do it. it is the DIY version of a dunlop Q-zone or jekeko wah

the dunlop crybaby GCB95 board fits in a 1590BB if you are careful how you do it. I will be buying 4 more crybaby's and gutting them for the enclosure soon. I do not want 4 Qzones sitting around collecting dust. if you want just the board, I can sell them.

This is precisely what I am doing.  I have four MoWah pcbs, doing some testing ... if I tell you anything more I'll be forced to kill you.  ( :) )

I also have a standard Cry Baby that the shell is fuddup but the circuit is 100% ($15 on ebay ... some idiot tried to ~improve~ the shell .... what some people's children will do when they get around tools!), a Keeley CB with the full-house mods done, and a CB Zak Wylde.  I've already been playing around with synthesizer state-variable filters in this manner as well as using flangers of various types and turing off the LFO in them using them as band pass filters (a la Robin Trower and Alex Lifeson).  I tend to prefer these sounds over using a graphic or parametric EQ and boosting theholysh it out of certain bandwidths.  Wahs, synth filters, and ~frozen~ flangers work better, as far as I'm concerned.

Stay tuned!  Oh ... and thanks for the help on the pots issue!
