Can an SPDT switch be used in place of the DPDT norm/bass switch? I can't see that the switch is doing anything other than routing the input signal through either the norm or the bass circuit. Am I missing something?

There would be a huge difference if you would use bass with normal setting. Sound would be weak and thin. It's a good investment to use dpdt there. Much more useful than to 25 k pot instead of a trimer. Because once you set it the way you like it you will not use it for some time.

Actually, the switch is making several connections at once, which an SPDT would not be able to do.  You need to use a DPDT.
