Why do people use box caps over greenies?

Box caps are great for PCB layouts that keep a common 5mm pitch, they look neat and tidy and they are good quality, but they are less useful for vero builds where you often need to use spans greater than 5mm to make efficient use of the board.  Greenies are better for this, but in sizes over 100nF they start getting quite chunky and in the larger sizes they have a larger pitch.  Panasonic's are the best of both worlds for me, consistently small bodies up to 470nF (1u gets a bit chunky but not too bad), and all with a 5mm pitch and so good for PCBs designed with that pitch, and with long enough leads to also be good for vero or perf builds.

I have full sets of them all and would always opt for Panasonic EQC's as my first choice, or if you can get them, box caps supplied on bandoliers with longer leads have the same advantages.

......

not exactly everything.

I recently bought a bag of 100 x 18nF boxed (they sent me 200) and 250 x 47nF brownish for 5$ each, so I've got a lot of likeing to get done.

and just the other day I spent an hour scratching around for an 18nF, I thought they was 1n5, for some reason. ..... so now I got no 1n5's ......

You can eat some real bargains there. Not consistent reliability though. Got some of those caps there that were like 4 layers deep. And some scratchy/noisy trimpots.

I like the box caps because when I'm done populating the board it looks like a little city....and I'm the Mayor!

I laughed so hard when I read this, I had to make it my new sig.... thanks!!!!

well, I'm not sure they make the "cheap eats guide", but, anyway, as the youngers would say. I've never had trubbles wit them.

what do you mean by "4 layers deep"?

haha. must have been on my phone. meant 'get'....  :icon_redface:

can't find the thread now, but a lot of amp builders came across the same problem about 4 years ago.

so... we got some electro caps. they looked sus. we pulled the insulation off and found another cap casing underneath with a different value and voltage rating. so we chopped that and found ANOTHER cap underneath that. not sure if there was another layer below that hehe. so the capacitance rating was mislabelled, the voltage we can assume was missabelled (at least one of them anyway). also, a new lead was joined onto one end and it would have been impossible for them to vent if needed. probably got happily taken back of course, not to discredit anyone there.

but just saying, had a couple issues. can be really, really good for cheap surplus gear but maybe not for consistency to send out to people. lots of good stories of getting stuff for like 1/10th the price is that balances their vibe.

bloody hell, imposter caps. it sounds like a lot of work to go to, and then you clear all yr stock of xxuF caps masqueraded as yyuF caps, next day someone wants a shirtload of xxuF. what's a component cheat to do, and does anything leave as it's correct, original, measurable value/rating?

sound like those audiofile clods that strip the outers off electros so they can put them into some wood. different thread.

bloody hell again, my typing's crap on this laptop, good thing I don't have a "phone".
