i have like, hundreds of nec5534's a friend gave me recently, and it looks like a 741 pinout... but it's got "balance compensation"... i read the data sheet, and paul advised on this some,
but can i use these interchangeably? any caveats?

should i tie unused pins to ground, or leave them floating?

thanks so much, building a few suzy q's for friends and don't feel like tracking down more 741's when i have a gazilliion of there. ;)

I was given a couple fistfuls of free 5534s at some point as well.  If you listened to that D-Scrambler thing I posted the other day, I used a 5534 instead of a 741 there.  No external compensation.  Works just fine.  Just note that the 5534 tends to hog more current than a 741.

Incidentally, you know how 5532s and 5534s are often used to make headphone amps?  Well, Elektor had a project for a 20W power amp using 5532s a couple years ago: http://www.elektor.com/magazines/2010/october/the-5532-opamplifier-part-1.1529745.lynkx  Maybe you could make yourself a little practice amp, like 5W or so, with all those 5534s.  :icon_wink:

I came across the same question when I modified the Philosopher's Tone circuit to delete the "grit" section. I removed the associated "grit" components and replaced the dual 5532 with a single 5534.

I put a 22pf ceramic between pins 5 and 8 because the op amp was being utilized as a voltage follower.

Here's a post from another site that might help clarify things.

I just designed a new fuzz circuit! It almost sounds a little different than the last fifty fuzz circuits I designed! ;)
