I recently bought myself a center punch, makes centering that pilot hole a bit easier. $2 well spent.

For maximum stability & accuracy, use or borrow a drill press along with a clamp/vice...eliminates spinning enclosures & the drill bit locking up towards the end...usually. Or consign the the drilling to a machine shop.
