SD-1 Mod, volume drop

Hey gang, I got carried away modding my SD-1 and here are the changes that I've made so far.

C6 - remote

!-- Bass mod
18 nF - 100 nF Wima cap
C3  47 nF - 100 nF Wima cap
C8  47 nF - 100 nF Wima cap

!-- Smooth Harshness
C7  1 µF Electro - 1uf Wima
C10  1 µF Electro - 1uf Wima

!-- Increase distortion
R6 - 4.7k - 3k

!-- Change distortion character
D6 - 1n4148 - 1n34a Germanium

!-- Set min gain
R5 - 33k - 10k

These changes are based on a link I found, http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=96462.0;wap2,  and an article on premier guitar. The pedal sounds pretty good but the level knob has to be pegged for unity gain. I should have checked the operation of the level knob after each mod but to be honest I didn't think to because I was having a good time goosing the gain knob. Do any of you know what part of the circuit affects the level and why the knob's operation changed? I would like to have the level knob function as it did before. Thanks
