You got it. I just made the same mistake. Multitasking, and next thing I know... 

That has a certain look - probably not at all what you were going for but very cool nonetheless.  Use it!

This method is fine for basic lettering and very simple art but if you are going for a lot of detail submerging the entire enclosure and protecting the unexposed areas is much better and will provide a uniform and higher quality etch.

I am not the absolute BEST source of information about enclosure etching BUT....

I did successfully etch aluminum plates for enclosures. One piece of advise I can recommend...

Ditch the acid bath and go with using a Q-tip to dab the acid onto the spots you want etched. It allows finer control, less use of product, and you dont subject the parts you DONT want etched to the acid.

sand the f.. out of it with very coarse grade wet n dry so the toner has something to bond too ...

no pre heat ...
