Edit I see u solved this as I was typing, good stuff! I'll post anyway since you still don't have a probe.

Second question is I bought some cable to make a cable for sound from my speakers as I don't have a tone generator. Will this work? And do I need to earth this as well. I am hoping the probe attaches to ground and the cap will test and the signal cable will go to in on the effect and ground with the other cable? Hopefully you get my drift.

I use a guitar as a tone generator, generally.  I'll either get the kids to bash the strings while I probe the circuit, or if the kids won't cooperate I'll strum it with my foot and imagine I'm a manic, multitasking octopus. Not the most elegant solution but works.

The probe plugs into an amp, the tone generator goes into the effect you need to debug.  The output of the effect you are troubleshooting is generally left unplugged.

Hope this helps some. It also doesn't need to be a huge 600v cap. I think I use a fairly big polyester fella around 200v, but only because big plastic casing is easy to grab and the legs are a bit more robust than on the small ones. I'd suspect then voltage rating just has to be higher than that of the circuit you are testing, for the sake of the caps health, rather than yours.

dick smith is in the process of leaving the building. I think they have finished their fire sailing, too.

as for wire links, if your bare resistor cutoffs are long enough, then yes, they are fine/perfect for links on the component-side of vero. otherwise, use any insulated wire you can lay your hands on, and fit thru the holes. single core/strand is easiest to use as links, multi-strand is most reliable for off-board wirings.
Hey, Scoop - how's your security clearance?

Check your Signal level there, Scoop - I thought you said witchhunt.

Dick Smith his own self located the wreckage of that rocket...was it Blue Streak?  I can't remember.  Too bad the store chain isn't what it used to be.

Cheers again guys

I'll get the probe sorted before my next build I think hahaha.

Can't wait to try the vero seems more of a challenge than some silk screened pcb with the values etc.

Kogan have bought out dick smith so it's all online now! Think I may find some mum & dad run shop in the future instead of the big box variety jaycar. At least the little guy will have some idea on electronics and won't be giving a CEO another holiday!

Cheers

Hi All

Thought I would post some progress pics.

I know the wires are long but I am waiting for the 16mm pots I ordered, and in my NOOB attempt at buying parts I got the 24mm.

I had to do the green as I wanted to know what the pedal is hahahaha. Next is trying decals or paint pens.

I will get a finished product up when its ready.

The bit between your IMG tags needs to be the URL of a picture.  Check out many of my posts for more complete details of how to post pictures!  :)

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...

Cheers again Marc

I used to have a website based Photobucket account. I will check if it is still valid and go from there!

So long as you can conjure up a URL that end .GIF or .JPG (or similar) then you're good to go.   :)   Imgur.com is a good place to try: no need to set up an account; forum-friendly.

Hey all

Some pics of the completed build. Overall I am happy, but its still not loud enough and me being the noob i wired the pots back to front i.e. up is down and down is up hahahaha

Going to re read that tubescreamer page again and see if i can do something with the values to make it roar!

Your links are still not to pictures: you're linking to pages on Photobucket.  You need to copy the "Direct" link on the RHS of the page (under "Share this photo") and put that between the IMG tags.  You can get a reasonably warm feeling if it's gonna work or not by hitting "Preview" before you "Post".

Do you have Q2 in backwards?
Nevermind.  Looked at a picture of the board on Tayda site. Looks ok.

I notice the parts list has a log pot for the volume, which I also use in my Tube Screamer builds; however the schematics for the TS808 normally mark this as a linear pot.

I'd be interested to know if someone has tried both, and which is generally preferred..

It all has to do with the way pot spreads the signal out(nontechnical speak) not bunched up then bam full ball. more gentle curve i think. I am new so don't hold me to that!
