I pick up a few metal can 2SC1071 transistors from my local shop because... well... I hadn't seen metal can trannies in real life before and they look cool!

They don't seem to have much use in pedals from what I've managed to find out. Any disputes about that comment?

It looks like a low power low hfe transistor. Could be useful. The good thing about building your own pedals is that you can experiment. Maybe you could see how it goes in a Si NPN fuzz circuit, especially if you matched it with another transistor with higher gain. It may even be worthwhile trying it in a BMP.

I tried them in a cascaded EHX LPB fuzz circuit I'm working on. They work but aren't as gutsy as 2N5088s or even 2N3904s. I'll be using sockets on the board. Maybe I'll take photos of the metal caps and use 2N5088s for the audio demo!

i've used 'em in fuzzfaces, where they are @#$%ING AWESOME...

it's all about the gain.. they won't work as well in the cascaded lpb1 deal (my take is the lardacious phat bastard) ...those circuits work a lot better with high gain transistors.

seriously pete, try 'em in a fuzz fuzz... a fuzzface or even a percolator, i bet you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Jimi. Looks like I've got a few builds to look into.

Ha!  :D

Do you have a DMM with hFE? It's over-rated as far as internet chatty talk and hi-fi unobtanium mojo caca del toro and what-have-you, but you can cross-reference those numbers with some 'advanced' google searches (like: "low gain" si site:diystompboxes.com) and shoot a little less blindly.

Thanks Garcho. I tested the trannies and they are alll around 80 hfe. As Jimi mentioned they should be good in a fuzz face. I didn't realize how simple the circuit is.
