Hey guys,
Building another punch amp and hit something I cant seem to work out.  May not even be possible :D

Basically on the punch amp you have the + and - speaker out, and the chip will automatically sense when headphones are plugged in which is cool.  But I cant get it to work for both.

So if I plug a speaker cable in, its mono, and I just wire up the + and - to the tip and sleeve, easy enough

for headphones its a stereo connector. I would connect ring and tip together for + and connect - to sleeve.

But now the problem is, if I connect the mono cable to the speaker to it with ring and tip connected together, it shorts the output.

So then I changed it to ring and sleeve together for - and + to tip, and I only get sound through one side of the headphones.

Is there a way to do it, or do you have to use 2 separate output jacks?

Cheers for any advice

took me a while to picture your problem, but now i think i get it. unless there's a way to detect the type of plug used, i can't thnk of a solution beyond using two jacks or maybe a switch. a switch would be the less-safe option, in case someone unfamiliar with it uses it and winds up shorting the output.

i'll have a ponder but it seems unlikely to me. maybe the key is some really elaborate way of detecting that plastic part between poles with a laser! lol.

Yeah I ended up using a switch and putting some lovely handdrawn pictures of a speaker and some headphones :D

Amazing coincidence!
I just added a headphone jack to my punch amp which is still on the breadboard - it worked a treat... but then ran into the same problem as you!  :icon_razz:
Looks like I'll be adding another switch...

Is there a size constraint? Can you just use a mono jack and a stereo jack for output wiring the mono tip to the stereo tip and ring? Then just plug into whatever you are using?

Or use a switched stereo jack so when headphones are plugged in it disconnects the mono output

The punch amp is in a 1590a so its very tight, i ended up using a spdt like PRR's mod link.
The switched stereo jack is a good idea for a 2 jack approach!
