RG sam ash fuzz box schematic

Hello. Does anyone know why the sam ash fuzz uses a emitter follower. Is it used as a buffer or an amplifier? Is this what gives it a unique sound? Thanks

the output transistor in an simple buffer,

I had an oc140 in mine as the second transistor which I removed for better purposes (amplifier rather than buffer)
In some respects its not unlike the dod 250 (one transistor/single transistor ic- follwed by the diodes) Right? I'm learning as I go here.
I popped a bigger output capacitor in mine and it's great. this was the sound I hoped to get from the brown source. A non complex distorion..... good for rhythm crunchy distortion.

The new reissue sounds similar. Wonder if they're using low gain Russian stuff?!

New reissue doesn't sound much like the original though. Higher gain and harsher than the original. No grind.
It's got a pair of MPS8099s and some diodes .. don't know what.

It is hard to see the resistors for the first gain stage in the picture(top right in the picture) I think I see 22K red red orange but I can't see some of the collector to base resistor bands. 
The first two bands are covered up but I do see a third band green for megohm

The first stage collector voltage and collector to base resistor value might give some insight
