Hyperion 2 oscillation

Howdy do, all!

I've built a hyperion 2 following this diagram:


the only things I've done differently were using two 1m and two 100k resistors in series for the 2.2m slots (didn't have any to hand), and I've got a 2N222A instead of the 2N2907A

Now, the effect works fine so there's no issue there but the whole thing craps out when I try to engage the oscillation, as soon as the pot gets any voltage then it just whines and kills the fuzz, I still get a signal from the guitar but there's no effect. I've reflowed the solder and checked all the points, I just cannot work out what's going on! Would anyone be able to hazard a guess as to what's happening?

from checking the voltages of the transistors, the fuzz is working when they're getting very little voltage, when I open up the oscillation and give them some juice then everything dies
