Every shop I go to, people tend to mix this up with dual ganged pots...I'm basically looking for the ones with dual shafts, and two knobs, one atop the other...are/were these commonly used by any industry/commercial products? Why the scarcity of these pots...would love some info and backstory, and hopefully clues to sourcing these parts.
Thanks,
J.

They use them on some of the Danelectro guitars. A few years ago I bought two and then the four knobs.. don't remember weher, but if you look for Dano replacement parts you might find some.

I've got a couple from an old tube tape recorder.  They have long shafts...can't remember the values right offhand.  You're welcome to them if you want.  PM me an address.

They are quite common on guitars and basses with active preamps.  Some of my Cool Cat pedals have them.  Even Small Bear carries a few: http://www.smallbearelec.com/servlet/Detail?no=1213.

Before you design them in, check that you can get concentric knobs.  I have several antique radios where they were used and if the knobs disappear, not much is available to replace them.  A lot of oscilloscopes used concentric knobs for pots and rotary switches.

You're right - - I've found quite a few of these pots from used car radio surplus; but having a really tough time finding knobs...will keep looking, though - - - thanks a ton for the input!

When you sell a used car it looks better if you don't have missing knobs, so look for the knobs in car parts stores - if you are in the US, places like Pep Boys, AutoZone. They're replacements for the radios you've been salvaging. Should be in the dashboard parts area.

Aviation radios use these a lot however aviation pricing isn't exactly friendly for DIY purposes... :o
