  Hey gang!

I'm working on an old MCI 2" 24 track deck.  8)

I have the service manual so this should be easy...theres LOTS of what looks like 741 opamps...but they're C2004P...Is that what they are?

I'm replacing these cruddy old ass red dip sockets that are just pure junk. I must have 200 to replace..or more. :-\

The writing on the DIP is
  C2004P
S 8009  or   8029   or 8031

Haven't seen that one. 80xx are year and week date code.
Do they have comp caps?

C2004P might be an in-house number. Is there a company logo on it? Is it DIP or Metal can?

You need to find the MCI deck chat-room or mail-list.

It seems very unlikely MCI would have used '741 in audio paths in 24-track days.

I have some guesses, but I really think the chips are fine and should be left alone, until you get some better advice from people who KNOW the MCI machines.

http://groupdiy.com/ is one place to ask where the MCI hang-outs are.

I found out the 2004 is a dual opamp and the 2003 is a single  :)

There are indeed 741's in an MCI but not in the audio path. It's recommended to replace bad opamps with 5534 and 5532's

I just have one or two missing opamps in the whole machine, so I count myself lucky. Found the whole maintenance manual too. Schematics and all testing / biasing info.

Last time I touched a 2" machine I was in my teens and it was an old 3M M79
