Those switches are a variation of a single pole 12 throw mechanism. There should be an adjustable stop fitted (often it's a washer with a bent tab, the tab fitting into one of several holes in the top of the switch). In the 4 throw case, you set the stop mechanism for 4 throws. If you don't fit it, it will repeat the same 4 switch selections 3 times in the full 12 clicks. If you only wanted 2 positions, you can have that for a 3pole 2throw.
