I'm hung up on some very elementary kicad topics that I should be able to find in the manual, on some kicad forums, or using common sense, but.... I can't.

In the pad properties menu, for a plated-through-hole circular pad, under the the "drill" section I have the x-axis (and y) set to 0.8mm

Will that be the actual size of the hole, or will the hole become smaller after the plated through hole process?

Thank you

That's the drilling size, the hole will be slight less because of the plating.

I'm extremely thankful. I have just a couple more draughtsbaby questions...

Now that I know the drill size, then "drill size" + "via diameter" +/- "manufacturing tolerance" = actual hole size, right?

So how do I set via diameter?

I see the design rules editor, but don't fully understand how this applies to what I'm trying to do.

?

via is just a pad with no component trough it...

Usually PCB manufacturers will tell you their "standards" such as min via diameter...
"min via drill" must always be smaller than "min via diameter" (your drill tip should be smaller than what you're trying to drill).

The design rules editor is there so you can set the absolute minimum values, it will alert you with an error message when you run DRC if you edit some vias or tracks against those values

Ahhhhhh, that clears up a lot. I was confused as to the difference between a PTH and a via.

So grateful, thanks
