BSIAB Placement in chain changes dist level

So I've been using a BSIAB II built from a kit at GGG. (I built it myself)

I noticed depending on where I place it in my chain of pedals, it is either a distortion machine, or a quieter crunch.

Best way to describe it is, if used alone with no other pedals I can get feedback just by not touching the strings.
Put in the chain I can get the guitar up next to the speakers and its quiet as a mouse.

Even in the chain I still get a good AC/DC (or a bit more) chunk, but alone it is searing and definitely hotter.

I have tried multiple places in the chain before and after buffered pedals (boss), first and last.  Basically unless its first (or in the first 3 spots) it gets the lower distortion output.

Is this something in the circuit?  None of my other dirt pedals suffer from this problem so I would have to guess its something in this build.

Of course my problem being first is just not a convenient position as its before my modulation and I need the dirt after.

Going further down the path.

A search here revealed a couple threads that it "doesn't play well with others" but they were just similar complaints to mine with no answer.

I did find a Digitech Bad Monkey before it causes some problem, but not the entire problem.  I can now get it to about 90% normal, but still unless its first or among the first the background noise/hiss increases greatly.  Again solo it is just perfect and this is livable just looking for a possible solution.
