You can always use the surface mount versions, they're not going anywhere. I've seen people selling adapter boards, maybe even already mounted adapter boards.

From Paul's site;

I'm deff including some adapter boards when I order from Paul. I wouldn't mind stocking up really. Like 100 boards, and 50 x J201, and 50 x 5457, but I don't want to wipe him out of his stock of boards either!

There are a few adapter board shared layouts on oshpark as well. They are a little cheaper, maybe a couple cents which I wouldn't not order from Paul over a few cents but there is one layout that I like the footprint better as it is a bit smaller and closer to the same size as a through hole board.

Ah I see! Perhaps then I should order some from both sources. Then all my bases are covered, and I can decide for myself what I should like to use.

The nice thing about Paul's is that the pins are labeled. One thing to be careful of is that once they are soldered you can't tell the difference between a 5457 and j201

Are the pinouts universal for all SMD JFETs?

Most of the popular SMD JFETs that are used in pedals are "universal" but, I say that with great apprehension...  :P I would think the best rule of thumb would be to assume that they are not universal and be very happy later on down the road that you did not just solder 100 of them or more in circuit with the wrong pinout  :icon_wink:

On another note: Thought maybe some of you would be very pleased to know that you can now get a really hard to find jfet at your friendly mouser or digikey now!  :icon_wink:

Edit: Ok, still not getting it?

Hint:
Drain current/idss = 0.3 - 6.5 mA
Used in all of the AMT Legend series preamp pedals... :icon_neutral:

The -R part is: 0.30 to 0.75 mA

Fine for small stuff.

Good catch Paul! Shoulda known better than to try and slip one by you :icon_wink:

If you are building amplifiers with ~~50K drain resistors, 4.5V/50K is 0.1mA, so a 0.3mA-0.75mA part like this -R sort will do the job.

Switching and heavy buffering applications may want a fatter FET.

Those are the primary jfets used in all of the AMT Legend series 1 and 2 preamp pedals and the in the preamp section of the AMT Stonehead 50 amp..

So what's the mojo with these particular fets? I don't know much about jfets, was there a popular design these were used in?

hymenoptera

I don't think there's any mojo to it. It's all about the curves. These (5457, j201, mpf102...) are all real sensitive devices, so they respond well to small signals with much biasing. Their curves are about right for guitar pedals.
