Boost Pedal is Quiet and Muffled

I haven't been able to find anyone with this particular problem so I thought I would post.

I built the 10 Minute Dirt and Boost pedal from DIYguitarpedals and everything went very smoothly, but when I was done it almost seems as if it is doing the opposite of a boost.  It's very quiet and muffled, you only really get any sound with the volume full.

This is the build in question. Now, my thought is with the transistor, is it common for a transistor to be defective? I have checked my solder joints and everything seems solid, but I will post pics later for others judgement.  Radioshack has the transistor in stock so I will replace it just to troubleshoot, but it sure seems like its the amplification that is the issue with it.

Any ideas would be helpful.

It's not the transistor, gonna double check the resistor and cap values

Found the issue was the resistors...remember kids, always be sure you have your resistors in the correct place!

Very true. I never commit anything to solder till I've checked everything is the right value and location 3 times. 1st resistors, then solder. Then capacitors, especially polarised then solder. Diodes usually follow paying attention to the anode and cathode position then solder. Lastly the transistors paying attention to the correct value in the right location and pin out then solder.
Taking the time and being very anal about it ensures less stress debugging later. By using this method I have never had a pedal not work as advertised.
