Never actually played thru a true "vibe". But I like the demos. Oh yeah - the Hendrix records are very nice.  The Trower.
What I do have is a BYOC phase royal: http://byocelectronics.com/phaseroyalinstructions.pdf
Do I have this right? It has a mix control. So if set that to fully wet, no dry, and I change the 47n caps to the univibe specs, I have myself a decent vibe?
I've read this thread: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=78996.0
and with the exception of the LFO shape, I should have  a pretty good vibe, no?
Or do you think I'd be happier adding a ROG Trivibe or an easyvibe to my List?

Hi Alan,
The optimal conversion of phaser to vibe generally involves more than simply a cap-swap.

  • The speed range needs changing, or else you'll find that only 15% of the Speed control will be useful.  While slower phasing speeds can sound dramatic - especially with a little feedback/resonance - slow vibe speeds are generally inaudible.  Optimizing a phaser for vibing best involves strapping a resistor in parallel with the speed pot so that max resistance is about 1/5 the stock value.
  • Vibes don't have feedback paths.  In fact, you'll find that adding feedback to a vibe degrades the effect quality.  Just plain sucks it away.
  • Part of the magic of true optical vibe units is the LFO waveform.  It's not impossible to achieve with JFETs, but the response of both the lightbulb and LDRs is slightly different than the rather direct response to a triangle LFO that JFETs have.  The result can sometimes leave one saying "It's not awful, but it doesn't sound as good as I hoped and have heard.  There's just...something...missing."
So, that's no reason to leave your Phase Royale alone.  BUt it will involve a couple of additional toggles, if you wish to switch back to Phaser from Vibe.

Gotcha. I think I'll be happier with one of each, and build a vibe.
