I wonder if centre negative was a Japanese convention, and that's why Boss used it? I've got a National Panasonic "Made In Japan" radio from the mid 70's and that's centre negative, I appreciate that's not really evidence or anything, but it's a thought.

I mean...  Connect,  doesn't work.  Oh, yeah, wrong power. Shouldn't have cooked the diode that fast!

.... in the real world.

If the diode fry,  wouldn't it become non conductive and save the rest of the circuit?
How about adding a fuse?

No if the diode fries then it becomes an open circuit, so like it's not there and the circuit then gets the reverse voltage. A diode across the supply is fine for protecting against trying to put a battery in the wrong way because you'll figure that out way before the battery or diode explodes but it's rubbish for protecting against a wrong polarity wallwart.
There's info on a better way to do reverse polarity protection here http://www.muzique.com/news/reverse-voltage-protection/ or do a search on the forum for other methods.

So the best way is to put a series diode and suffer the voltage drop...
