as far as a "heavy rock - metal" tone goes.... i was doing some auditioning and my order of preference is a 1) mosfet 2) jfet 3) BJT

those mosfets are nice!  glad i tried them!  used bs170's i had on hand.   it seems that a lot of ppl like 2n7000 as well.  guess i'll get a couple of them too.

(I'm not a guitar player- not even a guitar scratcher..) 

It definately depents on every specific ear - mine isn't capable to make an audible discrimination between Si & LED clipping..

If you like mosfet clippers try this On the breadboard Plexi.
The shaka5 overdrive but without the SRPP.
Build everything upto Q1 and put a big cap 1uf maybe before the new output pot R12
