Experimented with different transistors today, didn't have 2N2924s - BC108C and PN2222A sounded the best to me
  That's a FF.
  Sounds like you converted the polarities and made an Si Neg Gnd. version?

Pete - it's a US/Thomas Organ Co design, not directly related to the Ge PNP FF/ToneBender etc, and - a different design to the one in ambulancevoice's pic too (that's V8162 or 3, I'm talking about the first 2 'distortion boosters', the first one, V816, with no controls and and the 2nd one V8161, vol control only)

The original transistors are 2n2924 - Si/NPN, I just tried some other NPNs I had in the box.

Here's the schem (redrawn) and layout (it ain't pretty!)

John Lyons of Basic Audio builds an improved version of the V8162. Does anybody know more about his modifications?
