Which capacitors do you use? Which are "the best/recommended"

here in our little town, the only film caps I see are those green ones we call mylars. For electrolytics, only brands available here are hscon, jwco, and other China made ones I think, most names end with CON  ;D
none of those wima, panasonic, or other known brands here
so at first I was a bit hesitant to buy them thinking they might blow up after few uses

Not my pic:

How long would that have held up at 450VDC?  How good would it sound in a circuit that called for 40uF?  I try to avoid the cheapest Chinese options out there.  I don't really buy components on Ebay, either.  Stick with known brands from reputable distributors and you should be okay.

Wow. I'd heard of the "Russian Doll" capacitors. And assumed it was just exagerated. That photo is pretty worrying.

Nah this is what they were. It's even more frightening.

Floor-mat at the front entrance to my former place of employment. Oh... the irony.

Ha. Who buys shit like that?

Back on the photo of the capacitor, something else is annoying me about it. The legs appear to be on either side, like an axial capacitor, yet even though its hard to see clearly, they look like they're positioned off center.

thermionix

Yes it's a radial stuffed into an axial package.  A lot of that going on lately, although normally with the correct values.  Apparently, many cap makers just don't want to bother making axial caps any more.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.

yer. it bothers me, too, especially the way the butt-plug is pristine, but the end it came from is shredded. nobody would be staging photos, not on the interwebs, would they?

I'm very technically particular when it comes to this sort of thing.

My builds tend to have a lot of green Mylar caps because they remind me of Chiclet candy.
WIMA box caps because they remind me of Rhubarb and Custard.
Orange Drops because they remind of orange Wrigley's Extra.
1KV Ceramics because blue stuff.

What can I say, I like juicy looking builds.

More seriously, when it comes to clones I do actually go and start looking at spec sheets to make sure the details add up to make it as accurate as possible. I also tend to keep an eye on dimensions sheerly for logistical planning.

I could not resist adding more examples of the "Matryoshka doll" capacitors:
