I wish I had had something like this when I started.  It's especially nice to see a general parts list - I know when I first began it would be frustrating to have the itch to build something and not have the parts in the bins, but I was hesitant to go purchasing parts w/o a schematic because I wasn't sure quite what would be useful.   And all my electronics parts from the sorts of tinkering I was used too weren't so useful in the analog/music world . . .
Okay, maybe a lot of these things (and most of the things "I wish I had when I started") where out there to find - I kind of jumped right in when I began all this a while back . . . (here I am talking like I'm an expert at this!  haha!)
Regardless, I have a couple of interested friends whom I'll be forwarding this too.  (and maybe it'll keep 'em out of my parts drawers)

Hi sfr, make sure your friends also check out Aron's beginners project, its excellent!

My only minor quibble is that the 1N4148 and 1N914 diodes are the same thing; you don't need both. Also, the list could be shortened to essentials for those who find it rather scarily expensive. But it's definitely on the right track.

Oh, and at 10-off quantities, 1N4007 diodes are no more expensive than 1N4001s, and are more versatile.

That is quite a list! :D

Here is my input:

- 63/37 solder is easier to work with than 60/40 if you can find it.

- I agree that a short version would be helpful for many who cannot invest in the full list.

- in the chips section, the 4136 is not very common and the TL074 substitutes with different pins.

- 1N4148s are double current versions of the 1N914. The 4148 is univearsal.

- I would also change the ceramic caps for film caps between 1000pF and .1uF. For ceramics, type NPO is best and X7R is second best. 5YV style ceramics should be avoided.

- In test equipment, an audio probe and another amp, or a little test amp like a Little Gem is very helpful for tracing faults.

All in all, nice job! :D

Very helpful everyone..I have been forced to make my own lists until now..As i continue to build 3-4 projects at a time and always running to the local radio shack--only 1 person in 5 that knew what a potentiometer was..hmmmmm anyway..i can stock up from steve at smallbear and mouser w the basics instead of making small orders each week...I get bored easy and building these things are very relaxing..a nice getaway..Plus, i get great quality, help, and an online community of those who share the same interest..Hell, this really is a good time!! :D
