are you using a BC182L?

Yes, that & a 2N3904.

Thanks again :)

you can't go anywhere until you compare your transistor pinout to the correct manufacturers datasheet, and the layout diagram, and your wiring. your photo suggests you have a BC184, not a BC184L

I just double-checked. the transistor next to the 2N3904 is a CTBC182L.

All the other jazz will have to wait unfortunately. I've much more important things to decide (do I take the green or the black swimming trunks?)

I think duck is right, if you have a BC182L in there, to get it right you need to flip it upside down so that it is wired in BCE orientation. Your's is wired as a BC184. Note the transistor pinouts are BC182L: ECB; BC184: CBE.

It seems you just confirmed  :)
Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, others just gargle.

You know what, I put this PCB together over a year ago & then left it to gather dust.

When my first attempt failed I realised (now, quite probably incorrectly) that the BC182 was connected wrongly, hence the shielded middle leg being awkwardly bent across its neighbour. It was originally plugged in as you suggest. Facing in the opposite direction to the 2N3904.

How infuriating!

The chances are, as it stands, the circuit will work, once I switch the transistor back to how it originally was.
But, as tantalisingly close as it is, I just don't have time to check it before I go away. Back on the shelf it goes, for now.
