One last question for you guys as you are real builders, what is you opinion on the compensating cap with a Rat pedal? I'm using a TL071 with the stock cap, but tried a LM741 and a CA3130EZ as well and had good results. Should I remove or adjust that cap with those chips? I really don't feel like paying $5 each for a LM308, but I guess I could try an OP07DP as well.

Thanks again for the kind words as well, starting to feel somewhat normal but I've heard it takes months to completely heal from what I got. More building to put my focus elsewhere.

There are other single op-amps that have that feature though (at least two that I remember - TL070 - which seems to be extremely scarce - and another I don't recall which had different pins for it - 5 & 8 I think).

Ok cool, that's what I thought. I wanted to leave it in if he wanted to try a LM308, but at the same time if the cap *did* affect the chip I was going to remove it and just tell him no go with the LM308. I have a LM301 also but it just doesn't have the gain we like.

there's a place in melbourne will sell you a pack of 10 LM308HZ in the metal can for 4.50$. that's NatSemi parts, and our crappy aust dollar.

There's a local place here in Toronto that has a bin full of 308s for about 12$ each. Directly below is a bin of 208s for about 3$ each.
