386 octave circuits

Hallo, i have a question concerning 386 ics and octave circuits as the penny pedals finger print and fuzzhugger phantom octave, i was taking a look at both schematics and they share some similarities, so, my question is, is it necessary to use that ic as inverting for octave purposes?
EQD bit commander uses one too, but there it is being used as a first amplification to send signal to the base, octave up, oct down and 2nd oct down, thats what i understand from that. Tim Escobedo rambler uses too a 386 for distortion /octave, but Im not sure if that last acts as inv or non inv.

They are using feedback via a single diode to enforce asymmetry in the signal to give strong even harmonic content.
It must use the -input or else it would be positive feedback and it will either lock up or oscillate madly.
Possibly, you could arrange for the signal to use the +input and the feedback diode the -input. The existing arrangement is simpler.

Bit commander is using a logic counter chip, completely different concept.
