setting up eagle

can anyone suggest how to setup eagle, i wish to do my own board layouts for pedals and wish to know what settings to use, trace width, vias etc etc

Get over to the madbean forum and download the latest eagle library from there.

Each time you start a news schematic select the edit menu and then select edit net classes.

there you can define trace width and clearance details.  I usually set everything to 16mil but it's up to you.  Most fab houses give a minimum clearance of 12mil. 

if you use the properties command on a wire or trace you can define which net class it belongs to thus defining its width and clearance.
